  The renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava has been speaking to euronews. His designs - which take their inspiration from nature - provoke strong reactions; they are either loved or loathed. Calatrava, who considers himself to be above all an artist, says an architect is also a philanthropist. In the past cities were designed to last, today they provide an insight into the soul of the lost civilisations that built them. So, if architecture is the most tangible sign of a civilisation how then to preserve the sacred nature of a location?

  The Architecture of Ancient Rome adopted the external Greek architecture for their own purposes, which were so different from Greek buildings as to create a new architectural style. The two styles are often considered one body of classical architecture. This approach is considered reproductive, and sometimes it hinders scholars' understanding and ability to judge Roman buildings by Greek standards, particularly when relying solely on external appearances. The Romans absorbed Greek influence, apparent in many aspects closely related to architecture; for example, this can be seen in the introduction and use of the Triclinium in Roman villas as a place and manner of dining. The Romans, similarly, were indebted to their Etruscan neighbors and forefathers who supplied them with a wealth of knowledge essential for future architectural solutions, such as hydraulics and in the construction of arches. Social elements such as wealth and high population densities in cities forced the ancient Romans to discover new (architectural) solutions of their own. The use of vaults and arches together with a sound knowledge of building materials, for example, enabled them to achieve unprecedented successes in the construction of imposing structures for public use. Examples include the aqueducts of Rome, the Baths of Diocletian and the Baths of Caracalla, the basilicas and perhaps most famously of all, the Colosseum. They were reproduced at smaller scale in most important towns and cities in the Empire. Some surviving structures are almost complete, such as the town walls of Lugo in Hispania Tarraconensis, or northern Spain.

  Architecture Design Research - entry by David Lau (School of Architecture and Planning) for the multimedia category of Exposure 2009 Postgraduate Exposition at The University of Auckland. ARCHITECTURE DESIGN RESEARCH: DECAY OF THE MIDCITY COMPLEX AND REVIVAL THROUGH ALTERNATIVE URBAN DESIGN STRATEGIES In the 1980s, the Midcity Development on Queen St was proclaimed as the rebirth of Aucklands heart of entertainment and became our first flagship cinema multiplex. However, if we fast forward to the present day, the Midcity complex is seen as an abandoned and dysfunctional wasteland. My research investigates the cause and reason of this urban decay within the city, as well as seeking an alternative vision based upon successful modern urban strategies that will adapt to the citys constant rate of growth and expansion in the populated mid Queen St location, while creating opportunities for retail and commercial growth. My method of approach involved detail site analysis of the wider urban context of mid-town Auckland City. This process involved conducting investigation through physical mass modelling to help understand the mass, bulk and location while using digital modelling and fabrication through Laser cutting to explore alternative schemes that rejects typical retail proposals. The result is a design which revives the Midcity location and retains the potential connection between Queen Street and Elliott Street while incorporating elements of green public/private spaces, vertical continuation and offers social and entertainment opportunities. The revival design of the Midcity site would serve as a potential catalyst and exemplar to future built design revivals in other deceased and uninteresting sites throughout urban city of Auckland.
